Oriental Dance

Classical Belly Dance (Raks Sharki)

This term is very popular here in Germany and is actually falsely called Belly Dance. As in “Belly Dance”, the entire body is involved and the belly is simply a part of everything. Thus the description “Oriental Dance” is preferred. In Arabic it is called Raks Sharki ("Dance of the East") or Raks Baladi ("Dance of my country, my people")

Drum solo
Pure technique, earthquake with the body and perfect isolation

The drum solo is the highlight of an oriental dance. The female dancer is accompanied by percussion and while the drummer presents his solo, she has the opportunity to show her skill.

Baladi

The Baladi dance style is also called Beledi or Balady. The Baladi originally comes from the rural regions of Egypt.

The Baladi uses simple “straight“ rhythms and is fresh, coquettish and sensitive. The costume is of many accessories with arm charms, big earrings etc. Sometimes cymbals are used, sometimes a stick, they wear a long dress and a scarf around the hips.

Saidi / Stick dance

The stick dance is named Raqs Al Assaya in Arabic and descends from the Said. The Said is a region in Egypt in the southern part of the country.

Yashmak dance (veil dance)

The Yashmak dance is a variation of the belly dance, which was predominately cultivated in the U.S. and Europe. In the Arabic countries, the dance with the Yashmak (veil) often remains as the opening for the Raks Sharki.

Oriental Pop

A perfect example of oriental pop is Shakira. She showed the sinuous and dynamic dance movements of a belly dancer and let her hips shake with a shimmy tempo.

Oriental Hip Hop

A very sensual and feminine choreography with cumulative power and passion. In the past years, Arabic musicians have more and more discovered hip hop. The modern Arabic songs today occasionally integrate hip hop and rap sounds.

Oriental Dance

Bollywood

The Bollywood dance style is described as a modern and party dance style, which is similar to the dance interludes in the Indian movies in which love, laughter and sorrow is DANCED and sung. The mostly glamorously equipped and emotionally charged movies enchant millions of audiences in Germany and many other European countries.
